AAP stages walkout over Speaker’s refusal to move motion to tweak PPAs

Chandigarh, January 16, 2020 (Yes Punjab News)

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), under the leadership of Leader of Opposition (LoP), Harpal Singh Cheema, staged a walkout in protest against the denial of permission to move the private member bill in the Assembly, seeking termination of the power purchase agreement (PPAs), leading to jack up the electricity tariff in the state.

The AAP leaders walked out of the House raising slogans against the government under Cheema’s leadership. Others, who staged a walkout, included, besides Harpal Singh Cheema, Aman Arora, Sarabjit Kaur Manuke, Kultar Singh Sandhwan, Prof. Baljinder Kaur, Rupinder Kaur Ruby , Master Baldev Singh, Jai Kishan Singh Rouri, Manjit Singh Bilaspur and Kulwant Singh Pandori (All legislators).

Harpal Singh Cheema termed the Governor’s speech as a bundle of lies, saying the government in power had again tried to put the words in his mouth.

Addressing the media on Thursday, Cheema said that party senior leader and Sunam MLA Aman Arora, on behalf of the party, had sought permission to move the bill to tweak the expensive, one-sided agreements inked with private thermal plants by the Badal government, by forcing closure of the government thermal plants, saying the government’s denying permission to move the bill, was an anti-people move on the part of the government.

The LoP said that electricity would continue to be dearer in the state until or unless the one-sided agreements with private thermal plants were not canceled. Cheema appealed to all members to rise above party lines or other considerations and stand by the AAP seeking cancellation of the agreements.

Speaking on the occasion, Aman Arora said by refusing to move the private member bill to terminate the PPPs, the Captain Amarinder Singh government had once again left nothing to speculation that it stood with the power mafia and not with the people, who were paying hefty power bills through their noses, as the Badals had been doing earlier during their 10-year regime, alleging that it (Captain government) was usurping huge ‘booty’ (Commission) from private power companies.

The AAP leaders said that Sukhbir Singh Badal and Bikram Singh Majithia, who had been instrumental in the closure of the government thermal plants in the state producing sufficient power and installing power mafia in the state, were shedding crocodile tears over power pangs, which could no longer mislead the people of the state.
