Amritsar, January 4, 2025 (Yes Punjab News)
In a shocking incident, an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) sarpanch was shot dead by unidentified assailants during a wedding ceremony at a marriage palace in Amritsar on Saturday.
The victim, Jarmal Singh (55), the sarpanch of Valtoha village, was attending the wedding of the sister of another sarpanch when the attack took place at Marigold Resorts. According to police and eyewitness accounts, two unmasked men approached Singh while he was seated at a table outside the banquet hall and fired two shots at his head, killing him on the spot. The assailants fled immediately after the shooting.
AAP MLA Sarwan Singh Dhun, who was also present at the venue, said the attack appeared to be a targeted killing. He stated that while he was inside the hall having food, the sarpanch was seated outside when the shooters struck without any provocation. “There was no argument or scuffle. The attackers came with a clear intent and opened fire,” Dhun said.
The MLA further revealed that Jarmal Singh, an arhti (commission agent) by profession, had earlier received threats to his life and had lodged a complaint in this regard, following which an FIR was registered.
Confirming the incident, Jagjit Singh Walia, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP), Amritsar, said an investigation was underway. He added that the FIR related to the threat perception was registered in Tarn Taran, and further details would be provided by the Tarn Taran police.
The killing has sent shockwaves through political and local circles, raising concerns over law and order and the safety of elected representatives in the region.
