Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Punjab Assembly, through a letter to union home minister, Amit Shah, has demanded that the life and property of the Punjabis living in Shillong (Meghalaya) for over two centuries be protected by all means, thus performing his duty towards the minority community there by demolishing the Sowrd of Democles sword hanging on their heads for a long time now.
In his letter which was released to the media from party headquarters in Chandigarh here on Wednesday, Cheema said that ever after the district administration issued notification directing a large number of Punjabis, a majority of them Sikhs, living in Shillong for more than two decades to produce to prove their ownership rights of the landed property they owned, adding that a large number of families had been passing through a traumatic situation after receiving threatening calls from some terror group there.
Cheema sought personal intervention of home minister Amit Shah in protecting the life and property of the community there.
The AAP leader in his emotion-charged letter said that the community residing there for over two hundred years.
Expressing his shock and dismay over the High Court of the state directing the minority community there, which were in possession of all essential documentary evidence, like electricity connections in their homes and business establishments, ration cards, voter ID cards to prove their ownership rights.
Cheema said that AAP had urged state Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh to broach the issue with the prime minister and home minister of India to ensuring safety and security of the people of Punjab and safeguarding their properties.
He also urged union minister for state Harsimrat Kaur Badal play a proactive role in protecting the interests of the minority community in Meghalaya.
