AAP pins hopes on STF chief Harpreet Sidhu, MLAs say ‘crush drug lords with iron hand’

Chandigarh, July 20, 2019 (Yes Punjab News)

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Punjab, while expressing deep anguish over the unabated deaths of youths due to drug overdose, has pinned hopes on the Special Task Force (STF) chief Harpreet Singh Sidhu in his second innings, stating that he and his team would prove their mettle by taming the rampant smuggling of drugs in the state.

In a statement issued from party headquarters on Saturday, Punjab Kisan Wing chief and MLA Kultar Singh Sandhwan and chief spokesperson of the party, Prof Baljinder Kuar stated that the rising number of youth afflicted with HIV virus in the state and the deaths due to drug overdose were a matter of grave concern.

In such a situation when the young boys and girls falling prey to drugs, AAP had great expectations from the STF headed by Harpreet Singh Sidhu, saying that the Captain-led Congress government in the saddle, during its two and a half years’ tenure, had failed to take an urgent call on eliminating the menace of drugs in the state, a promise he had made to the people during the 2017 assembly elections.

Sandhwan on the occasion said that the AAP would extend its whole-hearted support to the cause if the STF team was determined to crush the mighty drug mafia calling the shots in the state without scantest fear of the law.

Describing the move as a right step in this direction, albeit late, to effectively deal with the menace of drugs and their smuggling in the state, Prof Baljinder Kaur said it was moral obligation of chief minister captain Amarinder Singh and state DGP make sure that those behind this deep-rooted nexus were not spared howsoever high and mighty he or she might be.

Prof Baljinder Kaur demanded that the big hauls of drugs being confiscated by state police and other government agencies should be destroyed after keeping small quantity thereof as sample in office ‘mall khanas’ (Store rooms) to check their re-circulation in the market through smuggling under their watch.
