AAP delegation heads to UP to meet Punjabi farmers facing eviction in Terai

Chandigarh, 22 June, 2020 (Yes Punjab News)

A delegation of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Punjab led by senior leader and Leader of Opposition (LoP) Harpal Singh Cheema on wednesday headed to Uttar Pradesh to meet the affected farmers in the Terai region of the state facing constant threats of eviction from the governments of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand governments.

A statement from party headquarters on Wednesday said the delegation comprised LoP Harpal Singh Cheema, State Kisan Wing President Kultar Singh Sandhwan, Political Review Committee Chairman Harchand Singh Bursat, State General Secretary Narinder Singh Shergill and party spokesperson Govinder Mittal, which met the affected farmers.

The LoP informed that the delegation paid a visit to Chamatpur Chakla village under Bijnor district of UP and listened to the grievances of the distressed farmers there. The delegation assured them of taking up the matter in the Parliament through state president and MP Bhagwant Mann, besides extending legal help, if needed, by knocking the apex court’s doors.

Disclosing this, Harpal Singh Cheema said that these lands were allotted to the farmers by the kings of the times, adding that during the land consolidation in 1952, the farmers were registered as owners of the lands. However, in 1963, the farmers were declared as tillers as per the law.

These farmers people had been tilling these lands ever since, saying that the BJP governments in UP and Uttarakhand had been hell bent on uprooting these farmers, who had shed their sweat to turning these barren lands fertile and cultivable, the way thousands of Punjabi farmers in the Kutch region in Gujarat were displaced by brute force, which reflected that anti-farmer stance of the governments of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh.

Kultar Singh Sandhwan on the occasion said the government of Uttar Pradesh was trying to evict the Terai farmers by grabbing the lands they had been tilling since the partition of the country. He said the delegation met the aggrieved farmers and their families in Bijnor district and urged the Yogi government to revisit the decision in the interest of the aggrieved farmers.
