Russian Chief Justice Igor Krasnov arrived in New Delhi on Friday to participate in the BRICS Chief Justices’ Forum, with bilateral judicial meetings and discussions on strengthening legal cooperation scheduled during his visit.
Russian Ambassador to India Denis Alipov and other officials received Krasnov at the airport.
The Russian Embassy in India said Krasnov would hold bilateral meetings with judicial counterparts from BRICS member countries, with the use of artificial intelligence in the justice system among the key issues to be discussed.
Iran’s Head of Judiciary, Ayatollah Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Ejei, also arrived in New Delhi to attend the forum. During his visit, he offered prayers at Jama Masjid and met its Imam, Maulana Syed Shaban Bukhari.
Mohseni-Ejei also interacted with Islamic scholars and religious leaders from various faiths at the Iranian Embassy in New Delhi.
The Supreme Court of India is hosting the BRICS Chief Justices’ Forum in New Delhi from September 4 to 6, bringing together Chief Justices, Presidents of Supreme Courts and senior judicial leaders from BRICS member states and partner countries.
The forum will deliberate on contemporary issues concerning justice delivery, international dispute resolution, technology and sustainable development.
Chief Justice of India Surya Kant is scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with heads of judicial delegations from Russia, China, Egypt, Indonesia, the UAE, Belarus, Kazakhstan, South Africa, Iran and Uzbekistan on Friday.
According to the Supreme Court, the meetings will facilitate direct exchanges on matters of mutual judicial interest and strengthen engagement among participating judiciaries.
On the second day of the forum, heads of delegations from BRICS member states and partner countries will address the gathering and share their views on issues of common interest to judicial institutions.
Judicial leaders representing Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, South Africa and the UAE are expected to participate, along with representatives from partner countries including Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda and Uzbekistan.
The substantive sessions will focus on four broad areas: mediation and international commercial disputes; cross-border enforcement of arbitral awards; artificial intelligence and the judiciary; and judicial leadership and sustainable development.
The discussions on mediation will examine its role in resolving international commercial disputes, while the session on arbitral awards will address enforcement challenges and the scope for greater procedural harmonisation.
The artificial intelligence session will explore digital innovation and the future of judicial administration. The final session will examine the judiciary’s role in ecological governance and promoting sustainable energy systems.
India’s BRICS Chairship is being guided by the theme, “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability”, reflecting the people-centric and humanity-first approach articulated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the 2025 Rio Summit.
BRICS currently comprises Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates. Its partner countries include Belarus, Cuba, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda, Uzbekistan and Vietnam.
