25 die of Covid-19 in Mumbai, highest in a day

Mumbai, April 28, 2020 –

Mumbai recorded the highest single-day death figures of 25 on Tuesday, including 4 in the Dharavi slum area, officials said here on Tuesday.

This is higher than the previous high of 16 casualties in a single-day notched on April 12, taking the city’s Covid-19 death toll to 244.

Dharavi gave a fresh shock on Tuesday with the number of positive cases shooting up from 288 to 330. Nineteen deaths have been reported from the area till date.

Of the 25 victims on Tuesday, 13 were males and 12 females among whom 17 had various serious diseases like hypertension, diabetes, asthma, heart problems etc.

The city also saw 393 new Covid-19 cases on Tuesday, taking the city’s tally to 5,982.

As many as 219 patients, who have fully recovered, were discharged on Tuesday, taking the total number of those cured to 1,234 till now.

In another scare, the state government announced the closure of the Mantralaya for two days from Wednesday to sanitise the entire building at Nariman Point.

This follows the reporting of a positive from the building which has led to several staffers being quarantined, though officials declined to comment on the issue.

The Mumbai Police on Tuesday announced that it has kept off duty all middle-aged police personnel, including those above 52 years of age with serious diseases and all policemen above the age of 55 after the city force recorded three deaths in the past three days.  (Agency)
