In a horrific act of violence, terrorists launched a brutal attack on tourists in the picturesque region of Pahalgam in South Kashmir on Tuesday, April 22, 2025, killing at least 25 people and injuring several others.

Officials are yet to confirm the death toll, but several reports quoting government sources have put the toll at 25. According to reports, the attack took place in the Baisaran meadow, a popular trekking site approximately four kilometers from Pahalgam’s main market.

According to government sources, 2 to 3 militants dressed in army uniforms opened fire on tourists riding horses to the Baisaran valley around 2:30 p.m. The area, known for its natural beauty and bustling tourism, quickly descended into chaos as gunfire echoed through the hills.

Casualties Across States: Tourists from Odisha, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra Among Victims

Among the deceased is Prashant Satpathy, a tourist from Odisha’s Balasore district. Another victim, Manjunath Rao, a realtor from Karnataka’s Shivamogga district, was shot in front of his wife Pallavi and son Abhi, both of whom survived and are under medical care.

Tourists from Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, and Maharashtra were also present at the site during the attack, according to eyewitnesses. While the final number of victims is being verified, authorities fear that the casualty count could rise.

Nation Responds with Outrage: PM, Opposition Leaders Condemn the Attack

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, currently on an official visit to Saudi Arabia, strongly condemned the terror strike, offering condolences to the victims’ families and pledging retribution. “Those behind this heinous act will not be spared,” he posted on X.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah held an emergency virtual briefing with security agencies and announced his travel to Srinagar for a high-level security review. “We will come down heavily on the perpetrators with the harshest consequences,” he stated.

J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah called it the “most serious attack on civilians in recent years,” urging vigilance and coordinated response across agencies.

Opposition, State Leaders Demand Accountability and Action

Opposition leaders including Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra condemned the attack in unison, calling it a “blot on humanity.” Rahul Gandhi demanded “concrete measures” from the government to prevent such “barbaric incidents.”

Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah held an emergency meeting following confirmation that citizens from his state were affected. His office dispatched teams and is coordinating with the Resident Commissioner in Delhi for support and victim repatriation.

Security Tightened in Kashmir Valley Amid Booming Tourism Season

The attack comes at a time when the Kashmir Valley is witnessing record tourist activity, with hotels in Pahalgam, Srinagar, Gulmarg, and Sonamarg operating at full capacity.

Following the incident, security has been significantly heightened across Anantnag district, and a massive manhunt is underway to locate the assailants. A dedicated emergency help desk has been set up at the Anantnag Police Control Room for tourists and relatives seeking information.
