1793 Indians still languishing in 95 US Jails for illegally crossing border

Jalandha,r May 10, 2020 (Yes Punjab News)

Nearly 1793 Indians are still languishing in 95 US jails for illegal crossing the US border according to the latest figures. This was disclosed here by Satnam Singh Chahal executive director of North American Punjabi Association (NAPA) in a press release issued here today.

Chahal who got this information from US Immigration and Customs and Enforcement department under Freedom of Information act (FOIA) said that this number of Indians in US Jails is also three times higher than the information of numbers provided in the Rajya Sabha by the Ministry of External affairs in a question number 2897 raised by MP Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa on July 18, 2019.

Large numbers of Indians are languishing in six US Jails which includes 171 in LaSalle Correction CTR Center, 164 in Adams County Detention Center, 140 in Imperial Regional Adult Detention Facility, 96 in Jackson Parish Correctional Center and 86 in Rich wood Correctional Center.

Although there is no data from which states of India these Indian prisoners belong to but it is said that most of them are from Northern India who illegally tried to cross the US border to seek asylum in the country. Most of the detainees at the federal facilities are asking for asylum claiming that they experienced violence or persecution in their home country.

This is a matter of serious concern that thousands of Indians, with an overwhelming majority of them being from Northern India, are languishing in Jails in the US,” he said.

Chahal who has been working in the field for several years alleged that there is a nexus of human traffickers and officials in Punjab, who encourage young Punjabis to leave their homes to illegally enter the US and charge from them Rs 35-50 lakh from each individual. He further said that Punjab Assembly passed legislation in 2010 and 2012 to stop the illegal human smuggling from Punjab but inspite of this, the business of illegal human smuggling from Punjab is flourishing day by day.

He urged the Punjab and Center Government of India to tighten the nose of those illegal Agents who are indulged in the illegal business of human smuggling from Punjab and whole of the country.
