Jalandhar, April 17, 2014 (YP Bureau)
In what could be termed as a setback to Congress nominee Santokh Singh Chaudhary and a big boost to SAD nominee Pawan Kumar Teenu's campaign, Congress leaders Dinesh Dhall Kaali, his brothers Amit Dhall and Bobby Dhall announced to quit Congress and joined Shiromani Akali Dal in the presence of SAD president and Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal.
Welcoming Congress leaders int o the party fold, the SAD president presented 'Siropas' to all of them and said that they would be suitably adjusted in the party.
Dinesh Dhall, a former Congress Councillor had turned rebel during last Vidhan Sabha elections and fought poll against former minister Avtar Henry from Jalandhar North Constituency. He was then thrown out of the party along with his brothers Amit Dhall and Bobby Dhall. Dhall had then bagged around eight thousand votes.
Amit Dhall is an independent councillor from ward no. 19 in Jalandhar while Bobby Dhall is a former elected General Secretary of Punjab Youth Congress.
Dhall had staked claim to Congress ticket in last Vidhan Sabha elections from Jalandhar North constituency but the party had allotted ticket to former minister Avtar Henry who had been representing the constituency. Even at that time, it remained in the air, that Dhall brothers might join Shiromani Akali Dal, but the same did not happen as some quarters in SAD-BJP alliance were against the proposal.
Today also, BJP CPS Krishan Dev Bhandari, was conspicuous by his absent as Sukhbir inducted Dhall brothers into the party.
Bhupinder Singh Makkar, a brother of SAD MLA Sarabjit Singh Makkar has been instrumental in bringing Dhall brothers to the SAD fold, it has been learnt.
The Dhall brothers had actually started campaigning for Congress nominee Santokh Singh Chaudhary but it was objected to by Avtar Henry. He is said to have clearly told Chaudhary that he won't be campaigning if 'rebels' i.e. Dhall brothers, joined the campaign.
It is pertinent to mention here that Henry was defeated at the hands of BJP candidate Krishan Dev Bhandari as Dinesh Dhall emerged as the third candidate eating out Congress votes.
Those present at the time of joining included SAD CPS and Jalandhar candidate Pawan Kumar Teenu, Cabinet Minister Bhagat Chuni Lal, SAD MLA Pargat Singh, Former MLA Sarabjit Singh Makkar, SAD district president Gurcharan Singh Channi, SAD Jalandhar Media Incharge Charanjiv Singh Lalli and Prince Sanan.
