Chandigarh, Nov. 18, 2013 –
With nursery admissions starting from the end of November, parents seem to worry about their child's future, as they are trying hard to get their wards admitted in schools.
They are worried that similar to last year, the students, who will apply in the general category, may have a slim chance of getting admission.
Since last two years, the final selection list displayed in various schools clearly mentioned that the first preference had been given to general category, namely children of alumni or former students, children with siblings studying in the same school and children of teaching staff. Remaining seats will be given to others. Parents are not sure that the number of seats offered by some of the prominent schools would be entirely devoted to the general category or not. Some of the schools have reserved the seats under various categories but they say that the number of seats reserved would be finalised once the number of applications are seen, and are not willing to spill the beans on the reservation process. "The students will be admitted according to the criterion which has been put up by the school administration. We try to accommodate as many students as we can. Out of the total seats, 25% seats are to be reserved for underprivileged students under Right to Education Act (RTE)," said a private school principal.
According to the website of one of the most prominent school of the city, Strawberry Fields World School, Sector 26 reads that the admission process is simple and transparent, in accordance with the government guidelines. Students are selected through a draw. However, preference is given to students whose siblings are studying at Strawberry Fields World School and once the seats are filled using the above admission criteria, a draw of lots, if necessary is held.
Jaskeerat Saini, a parent, said, "I have just shifted to the city from Amritsar with my family, the problem is that I have no connection or influence in the city. Does that mean my son will not get admission anywhere? The schools must fix seats for various categories." Most schools have decided to go with common admission schedule chalked out by the education department, and are fixing dates for submission of forms. Last date for form submission is December 10.
